Things To Do in Jackson Hole: What to See and Experience in Wyoming's Iconic Valley

Jackson Hole refers to a charming valley that includes the towns of Kelly, Jackson, Moose, Moran, Teton Village, and Wilson. Jackson Hole is named after David (or also known as Davey) Jackson, a fur trader from the 1800s. "Hole" refers to the mountain valley. This wonderful place has Old West heritage paired with natural grandeur and all sorts of outdoor activities that'll please everyone. You're sure to get a taste of a little of everything.

Activities


  • The Jackson Hole Town Square Shootout: A summer tradition that began in 1957, this thrilling (and free!) experience takes place May 31st through Labor Day at 6 pm Monday through Saturday. This 20 minute reenactment of an Old West shootout consists of cowboys, outlaws, and saloon girls. It really brings the spirit of the frontier to life. Located at Jackson's Town Square, this standing event (no benches around as it takes place on the street) brings in crowds, so be sure to arrive early to get the best viewing spot.

  • Shopping: There are plenty of souvenir shops around sure to make everyone happy. Lee's Tees, Shirt Off My Back, Lucky You Gifts and Mangy Moose Emporium all have the perfect souvenirs no matter what you might be looking for. Shirts, postcards, waterbottles, keychains, hats, trinkets, magnets, home decor, etc. It is all conviently located in Jackson's town square. There are few parking lots in the immediate area, which can fill up fast depending on the time of day. Mornings are typically quieter to get some shopping in before the afternoon and evening crowds. At that point, parking is still achievable, just further away.

  • Moo's Gourmet Ice Cream: An ice cream shop serving a variety of delicious flavors, including huckleberry! It can also be found in Jackson's Town Square. The best part about this is that it's organic, all natural ice cream. Fun fact- the Food Network voted their huckleberry ice cream the best dessert in Wyoming!

  • Million Dollar Cowboy Bar: A historic bar with a music venue known for having a variety of music legends perform there throughout its history. It has saddle seats! Opened in 1937, the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is located in Jackson's Town Square. This iconic place has been featured in 'Any Which Way You Can' with Clint Eastwood. Its Western decor and cowboy vibe makes it a fun place to visit.

  • Teton Village: Home to various clothing and sports shops as well as the Four Seasons Resort, plus outdoor recreation. It is located at the base of Rendezvous Mountain. The mountain is known as a spot for skiing, hiking and mountain biking. The MudRoom can also be found in Teton Village, where e-bikes can be rented. If you choose to rent an e-bike, at the time of this writing, it is $95 for the day. It’s a perfect way to see more of Grand Teton National Park, which is a 6 mile scenic ride away. There is also an option to rent regular bikes as well in Teton Village. Teton Village Sports and JH Sports offer bike rentals.

  • The National Museum of Wildlife Art: This museum features various wildlife art and is located in Jackson, about 2 miles (4 minutes) away from Grand Teton National Park. The admission is inexpensive. In addition, there is an outdoor sculpture trail that is free and open to the public. The museum is bigger than it appears. It overlooks the National Elk Refuge and its vast land. Situated on a butte, the National Museum of Wildlife Art has a few thousand different pieces of artwork to view.

  • White Water Rafting: White water rafting down Snake River is a popular activity and fun for those that are adventurous. There are options to sign up in Jackson as well as right outside the South Entrance of Grand Teton National Park.

  • Astoria Hot Springs Park: Nothing can beat the pleasure of soaking in a hot spring. Restorative and relaxing, this experience is a must. Walk-ins at Astoria Hot Springs Park are accepted, though due to its popularity, it is encouraged to make a reservation. Reservations are available in two hour windows. The hot springs are healing for the mind and body, plus offer a moment of peace and a rare kind of stillness, where you get to pause in time while enjoying what the Earth has to offer.
